Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a kitten foster for EGAS?

If interested in learning more about becoming a foster for the Elk Grove Animal Shelter, please contact us by email and we can provide the information needed for you to decide what fits best with you, your household, and your time constraints.

Can my children help foster kittens?

Yes, of course! Fostering kittens is a great summer activity for the whole family. The summer months are when the need for fostering is the greatest as hundreds of little orphaned kittens are brought into the Shelter and rescued by their staff, volunteers and fosters. Fostering is a very rewarding experience and teaches your children compassion and responsibility along with the joy they receive while caring for the little ones.

Where can I find neonatal kitten care resources?

Our non-profit offers free Entry Level Neonatal Kitten Care classes at the Elk Grove Animal  Shelter. Please check our homepage for announcements on dates of future classes and send an email to us to sign up. We will provide at the class all information that you need to successfully foster kittens for EGAS.

Are there any recommended foster supplies?

Our favorite foster supplies are listed on our Amazon Wish List. We also feature these supplies at our Neonatal Kitten Care class so please sign up for a demonstration!

Spay and neuter resources

While all animals that are adopted out of the Elk Grove Shelter are altered (spayed and neutered), the shelter periodically provides a low-cost clinic for Elk Grove residents to get their unaltered pets sterilized. See the shelter's website for more information. If appointments are unavailable through the Elk Grove Shelter, their staff can provide a list of other spay/neuter options.

TNR resources

See the Elk Grove Animal Shelter's website for more information on their TNR resources: Community Cats/Trap, Neuter and Release
